VNX5700 Storage Processor Enclosure (SPE) is a high-performance unified storage system based on modular architecture that integrates hardware components for block, file, and object with concurrent support for native NAS, CIFS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, and FCoE protocols. The VNX5700 delivers file (NAS) functionality via X-Blade data movers and block (iSCSI, FCoE, and FC) storage via dual storage processors leveraging full 6Gbps SAS disk drive topology. Optimized for virtual applications, the VNX5700 achieves new levels of performance, compliance, protection and ease of management. VNX5700 allows you to take advantage of Flash performance using all Flash (EFD) drives for extendable cache and quick virtualization with its high bandwidth configurations.
DELL EMC VNX5700 Base Knowledge .
This VNX5700 is a bit different than the 5100, 5300, or the 5500. This VNX5700 does not have any drive slots. All drives are in the DAE’s and link to the Storage Processor Enclosure (SPE). The SPE is also known and can hold up to 2 SP’s. These SP’s are very different from the lower-tiered versions. These SP’s have 4 I/O Module bays with 5 different I/O types.
The VNX5700 platform is a high-end/mid-capacity storage platform. It offers Block, File, or Unified Block and File services. These services are composed of:
- Block-only — Includes a storage processor enclosure (SPE), a 1U 1.2 KW or a 2U 2.2 KW standby power supply (SPS), and disk-array enclosures (DAEs) for holding hard disk drives that are integrated to facilitate Fibre Channel, Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), and iSCSI Block services to Windows and UNIX hosts.
- File-only — Adds the Data Mover enclosure (DME) and Control Station (CS) to the SPE, SPS, and DAEs to facilitate File services to CIFS/NFS clients.
- Unified Block and File — Uses same hardware as the File-only configuration but adds FC, iSCSI, and FCoE I/O connectivity to provide Block services to host simultaneously so as to provide file services to clients.

Drives Supported: Serial attached-SCSI (SAS), near-line SAS (NL-SAS), and Flash.
I/O Supported: Both the SP’s and the DM’s have I/O capabilities. There is a lot of detailed information about these ports. To get a full understanding I suggest you read the manual.
Storage Processor Enclosure (SPE):
Each Storage Processor (SP) has A CPU module with an Intel Xeon 4-core 2.4-GHz processor with six Double Data Rate Three (DDR3) synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM) slots supporting 2, 4, or 8-GB SDRAM per SP.
Storage Processor I/O Supported:
Five PCI Gen 2 x4 I/O module slots supporting a combination of the following five UltraFlex ™ I/O modules:
- Four-port 6-Gb/s SAS (slot 0 only)
- Two-port 10-Gb/s optical or active Twinax 4 (iSCSI protocol)
- Two-port 10-Gb/s optical or active Twinax Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)
- Four-port 1-Gb/s copper iSCSI
- Four-port 8-Gb/s optical Fibre Channel (running at 2, 4, or 8-Gb/s)
Data Movers Enclosure (DME):
With the File or Unified configuration this VNX5700 can support 1, 2, or 4 Data Movers.
One module consists of one Intel Xeon 4-core 2.40-GHz processor. Six DDR3 synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM) slots supporting 2, 4, or 8-GB SDRAM for up to 12 GB per CPU module. Each Data Mover has Five PCI Gen 2 x4 I/O module slots supporting a combination of the following four UltraFlex I/O modules:
- Four-port 8-Gb/s optical (running at 2, 4, or 8 Gb/s); in slot 0
- Two-port 10-Gb/s optical or active Twinax 7
- Four-port 1-Gb/s copper
- Two-port 1-Gb/s copper plus two-port 1-Gb/s optical
Control Station (CS):
If the VNX5700 is configured in the File or Unified configuration. Then you will need the Control Station. One to two Control Stations. Each Control Station consists of the following features:
- Intel 2.0 GHz single-core Celeron processor
- 2 GB of RAM
- One 250-GB SATA hard drive
- One DVD-ROM drive
- Four RJ-45 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T network interface connectors
(located on the rear panel)
Standby Power Supply (SPS)
The SPS performs the same function whether it’s a 1U or 2U.
The VNX5700 has the option when a 4U DAE is installed to have a 2U SPS. The 1U is a 1.2 KW Power Supply while the 2U is a 2.2 KW power supply. When the power shuts off the SPS allows the system to write the cache to the DAE. If the power is not fully charged this feature is not enabled.
After a full power outage, an SPS typically requires 45 minutes or a maximum of 75 minutes to charge. To charge the SPS after being off-line usually requires at least 2 hours.
NOTE: Use a dual 2U SPS when a 4U DAE with Flash drives is used in a Vault drive configuration. Otherwise, the dual 1U SPS is used with the 2U or 3U DAE as the Vault drive.
Disk Array Enclosure (DAE)
Expansion of up to thirty-three 3U, 15 (3.5-inch) disk drive DAEs (a maximum of 495 drives) or up to twenty 2U, 25 (2.5-inch) disk drive DAEs (a maximum of 500 drives) or up to seven 4U, 60 (2.5- or 3.5-inch) DAEs (for a total of 420 disk drives)
